Is Pixel Watch 2 a waterproof or water-resistant smartwatch?
They may sound similar, but waterproof and water-resistant devices have different capabilities. Find out the difference and how to make the best of your Pixel Watch 22 accordingly.

Wearable tech, including smartwatches, has seen immense growth in recent years.

They're small but mighty, packing in a variety of unique features like tracking your fitness, alerting you to smartphone notifications, and even letting you send texts and make calls.

But one common question is should you wear your smartwatch in the shower or in the pool? And what’s the difference between waterproof and water-resistant smartwatches? Let's dive into what it all means.

Understanding water resistance

Water-resistant smartwatches are like your trusty umbrella on a rainy day – they can withstand some exposure to water without being damaged. However, it's essential to note that water resistance is not an absolute guarantee against all water damage.

Remember to exercise caution and avoid submerging your water-resistant watch beyond its designated depth rating. For Pixel Watch 2, this rating is 5 ATM (50 metres).1

Caught in the rain? Sweaty during your intense spin workout? Or wearing your smartwatch for swimming laps? The water resistance of Pixel Watch 21 makes it a trusty smartwatch choice for these everyday occasions. When deciding between a water-resistant and waterproof smartwatch, consider your lifestyle, fitness and usage habits. If you need a smartwatch for everyday activities and occasional exposure to water, consider a water-resistant option.

Benefits of a water-resistant smartwatch

Water-resistant smartwatches like our Pixel Watch 2 offer several handy benefits:

  • Everyday protection. With water resistance, you don't need to worry about getting your watch wet from rain, sweat, or accidental spills during daily activities.

  • Enhanced durability. Water resistance adds an extra layer of durability to your smartwatch, making it more resistant to damage from moisture and humidity.

  • Versatile usage. Whether you're chilling at the poolside on holiday, handling your kids’ bathtime splashes, or caught in a sudden downpour, a water-resistant smartwatch like the Pixel Watch 2 can stay by your side without skipping a beat.

  • Peace of mind. You can wear your Pixel Watch 2 with confidence, knowing that it's built to withstand exposure to water to a certain extent, reducing the risk of damage from water-related accidents.

  • Longevity. Water resistance helps extend the lifespan of your smartwatch by protecting its internal components from moisture, ensuring that it remains functional and reliable for years to come.

Wearing your smartwatch while swimming

While water-resistant smartwatches aren’t fully waterproof, they can still withstand activities like swimming, bathing, and showering, as long as it’s kept to the specified depth rating.

Keep in mind that, like all waterproof and water-resistant tech devices, it's crucial to minimise exposure to moisture to maintain Pixel Watch 2’s integrity. While you can wear your Pixel Watch 2 for swimming or during your water aerobics class, removing it whenever possible is best to avoid unnecessary moisture exposure.

Differentiating waterproof protection

The term "waterproof" indicates complete protection against water, meaning that the device can be submerged underwater without sustaining damage. Unlike water resistance, waterproofing provides a higher level of protection and is often associated with devices specifically designed for underwater use, such as diving.

It's crucial to understand that while a watch may be labelled as waterproof, it still has its limitations. Manufacturers often specify the maximum depth and duration recommended to avoid damage. Pushing those limits may result in water seeping into the watch.

Pixel Watch 2 and water resistance

Enjoy peace of mind knowing that your device can withstand exposure to water during day-to-day activities – your Pixel Watch 2 is built to endure.

However, it's essential to adhere to our guidelines regarding water exposure and regularly clean and care for your Pixel Watch 2 to prevent any potential damage.

Whether you're working on your backstroke personal best or tracking your daily steps in the rain, understanding the difference between waterproof and water-resistant can maximise your Pixel Watch 2 experience while safeguarding your device against potential water hazards.

  1. Google Pixel Watch 2 is designed to comply with a water protection rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 and a rating of 5 ATM under ISO standard 22810:2010 when manufactured, but it is not waterproof. Water resistance is not a permanent condition and decreases or is lost over time due to normal wear and tear, repair, disassembly or damage. Dropping your device may result in loss of water resistance. Google Pixel Watch 2 is designed to be used in shallow water and should not be used for activities involving water at high velocity or high temperature. Some Google Pixel Watch 2 bands are not water resistant. See g.co/pixelwatch/water for details. After any exposure to liquid, we recommend drying the watch and band because, as with any wearable device, it's best for your skin if the band is clean and dry.

  2. Works with most phones running Android 9.0 or newer and requires a Google Account, Google Pixel Watch app and Internet access. Some features require the Fitbit mobile app and/or a paid subscription. Google apps and services are not available in all countries or languages. See g.co/pixelwatch/specs for technical and device specifications.
