• Text: Just type your question or request into the chat field.

• Voice: Tap the microphone icon and speak naturally. Alternatively, you can say ‘Hey Google’ to get hands-free assistance. 

  • To activate, search "Voice Match” in your search bar > Select “Hey Google & Voice Match > turn on "Hey Google". Follow the on-screen prompts to train Google Assistant to recognise your voice.

• Image: Tap the camera icon to take a photo or upload one from your library to ask questions about what you see.

Going further, Gemini’s multimodal capabilities understands you through text, sights, and sounds, and it connects directly with your other Google apps. Imagine planning a trip by voice and having Gemini check your calendar and browse flights in one go. This integration with your Google apps, plus seamless access to Google services like Gmail, YouTube, and Maps, lets Gemini quickly find information, open emails, play videos, and get directions – making your daily life smoother and more efficient.

Accessing Gemini is easy, no matter your phone:

• Pixel 9 Series: Gemini is built-in and ready to go. Just press and hold the power button or say "Hey Google" to activate it.

• Other Android Phones (including older Pixels) and iPhones: Download the free Gemini app from the Google Play Store or App Store. Once installed, you can start chatting, asking questions, or using voice and image inputs.²

Pro Tip: While using any app, you can quickly ask Gemini about what's on your screen without switching apps. Just launch Gemini and tap "Add this screen." To enable this, go to your Profile icon → Settings → Screen Context and turn on "Use Screen Text" and "Use Screenshots."

As Google transitions Google Assistant users on mobile to Gemini,³ you'll still enjoy familiar features like playing music, setting timers, and lock screen actions, but now with a more intuitive experience using text, voice, and images.⁴ With the classic Google Assistant set to be phased out on most mobile devices by the end of the year, it’s a good time to consider making the switch if you haven’t already.

To switch to Gemini, you’ll need to change your default assistant. Here’s how:

1. Open Google Assistant by holding down the power button or saying "Hey Google."

2. If prompted to switch to Gemini, follow the on-screen instructions.

3. If you don’t see the prompt, go to: Settings → Apps → Assistant → Digital Assistant from Google → Gemini.
