There’s lots of talk about the future benefits of AI. But at Google, the future is already here.

We call it Gemini Nano, our AI model built for maximum efficiency on Pixel phones.

Gemini Nano, now enhanced on the Pixel 9 series with multimodal capabilities, powers a range of AI features such as

, TalkBack, Summarise in Recorder and smart replies using Magic Compose. Gemini Nano's capabilities extend across multiple Pixel apps, so enjoy these features on Pixel 9 series, while Pixel 8 users can still benefit from text-based features like Magic Compose and Summarise in Recorder.

What AI features are available on Gemini Nano?
Get to the point of your recordings – fast – with Summarise in Recorder

uses Gemini Nano to take your recorded conversations, interviews, presentations, lectures – any speech, really – and build a digestible summary of the main points. All without the need for an internet connection.

Cool, right? Even better, it lets you skip the lengthy task of transcribing or listening through your recordings. Playing, rewinding, typing notes, powering through irrelevant sections of the recording – these are all very time-consuming. And if you have Pixel 9 Pro, you simply never have to do them again.

Imagine how much more you can get done when you free up all that time!

Quality writing takes time – but it takes less on Google Pixel

If you have a

, you’ve probably noticed Magic Compose in your Google Messages app, which can transform what you write into different styles.

It works the same on Pixel 9, but thanks to the power of Gemini Nano, it no longer requires an internet connection. So if you and your phone are in a place where coverage and Wi-Fi are lacking, you can still be the best texter in your thread.

Gemini Nano’s capabilities are only growing

Now on the Pixel 9 series, Gemini Nano is enhanced with full multimodal capabilities, so your phone will be able to understand more information in context beyond text – like sights, sounds, and spoken language.

One example for how this will work: the accessibility feature TalkBack. It’s available on Android and helps people who are blind or have low vision interact with their devices using touch and spoken feedback. Right now, TalkBack users come across an average of 90 unlabeled images per day. Gemini Nano will help provide more vivid descriptions – like more details about what’s in a photo sent by family or friends, or the style and cut of clothes when shopping online. Since Gemini Nano runs on device, these descriptions will happen quickly, and even work when there’s no network connection.

One other potential use case: detecting suspicious financial activity and fraud. According to the 2023 Global State of Scams Report by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, in a 12-month period people across the globe lost more than $1 trillion to scams. Thanks to Gemini Nano, your phone will be able to alert you in real time during a call if it detects conversation patterns commonly associated with scams.

For example, you would receive an alert if a “bank representative” tells you to urgently transfer funds, make a payment with a gift card, or ask for personal information like bank PINs or passwords.
