This year Google turns 25, and it has inspired us to look back. As we continue on our mission to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful, we never want to lose our playfulness and colourful culture that has been part of the company since day one.
When Google was founded back in 1998, Larry and Sergey were working in a friend’s garage and built their initial server from Lego. Today we have offices in cities all over the world, and our devices are premium pieces of design, but the spirit of the garage and the playfulness of Lego is still with us.
To celebrate our 25th Anniversary, we’ve designed a special commemorative wallpaper that illustrates milestones and memories from our journey of the last 25 years.
There are nods to our origin, like the year of our founding, Larry & Sergey, and the mathematical inspiration of our name. We’ve also included products such as Search, Mail, Chat, Maps, Nest, Chromebook, AI and Pixel and references to platforms like the Google Store & Google Play, and an iconic illustration celebrating our arrival into Singapore.
We also wanted to look back at some of the cultural moments that really speak to the colourful, playful side of our company. This is the stuff that truly makes us ‘Google’.
The employee lanyard with a dog on it? That’s Yoshka, our very first ‘Doogler’. We’ve always been a dog-friendly workplace and there’s even a dog park at the Mountain View campus called The Doogleplex. The illustration of the chef’s hat is an acknowledgement of our passion for good food. Our first executive chef was hired from a cook-off that was judged by all employees at the time.
Can you spot the Chrome Dino? We love games, so when we had the idea of sneaking one into our browser, there were no second thoughts. For the superfans, there’s also an illustration that speaks to an early April Fools’ hoax. We are fairly regular pranksters and the Google Gulp still brings a smile.
For new Googlers, the ‘Noogler’ cap is a fun way of introducing them to the rest of the team and letting them know that we’re not the most formal bunch. The GBikes referenced in the design, are a colourful feature of the Mountain View campus and make it a bit easier to get from one part to another.
If you like our anniversary pattern, there’s two versions below that are free to download as wallpapers for your device. We hope you enjoy them, because it’s a pleasure to share this anniversary and the memories of our journey with you.
